For nearly 6000 years, people have turned to the power of plants for healing purposes. But one alternative remedy in particular seems to be gaining more popularity than ever: essential oils. In fact, the interest in using essential oils to improve the body and mind has grown into a billion-dollar industry in the United States alone.
What Are Essential Oils?
So, what exactly are essential oils? Essential oils are highly concentrated aromatic extracts that are distilled or expressed from flowers, leaves, resins, roots, and other plant materials. These extracts are then used in holistic treatments, like aromatherapy. Although the science behind aromatherapy’s health benefits is hard to find and they should not be used to treat serious ailments without speaking to a doctor, there are many people who believe in the healing powers of essential oils.
Although essential oils are generally recognized as safe for aromatherapy, here is why you should never use them with your Spärkel:
Essential Oils will Damage and Weaken Your Plastic Spärkel Bottle
Essential oils are extremely concentrated and powerful substances with a myriad of properties and potencies that can damage and/or deteriorate plastic and many other materials. This is why you will always find essential oils in glass containers! Essential oils are often concentrated essential extracts dissolved in volatile carrier oils. The volatility of the carrier oil is why essential oils evaporate so quickly and strongly when rubbed on your skin or used in vaporizers and diffusers. This volatile nature is very destructive to all plastics, undermining its strength and toughness. If your Spärkel bottle loses its toughness through exposure to essential oils, it creates a safety risk. Because of this, essential oils should never be used with your Spärkel.
Oil & Water Don’t Mix
No matter how much you mix oil and water, they always separate. A lesson you probably learned in science class. This also applies to essential oils and carrier oils. Because they do not dissolve in water, the molecules and chemical constituents that make up essential oils can be irritating to many materials (like plastic) and mucous membrane tissue (your mouth, esophagus and stomach). Remember that essential oils are extremely concentrated. For example, one drop of lemon essential oil is not like one drop of lemon juice. Lemon essential oil is expressed from pounds of lemon rinds and is incredibly potent.
It Is Not Recommended You Ingest Essential Oils
Although essential oils are derived from plants, that doesn't mean they are healthy to consume. Neither the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the United States nor Health Canada recommend ingesting essential oils, and neither do we. Although essential oils are generally recognized as safe for aromatherapy, the NCPC (National Capital Poison Control Center) actually warns that essential oils could be poisonous if swallowed or absorbed through the skin. Since essential oils are not regulated by the FDA, it’s impossible to be sure of what's actually in the oils. The oils could be mixed with contaminants that cause rashes on the skin or toxic effects if ingested, according to Poison Control. They can also lead to interactions with other medications you may be taking.
If you're considering using essential oils in any way, always consult your doctor about the possible risks and benefits.
